Theater Aspen unveils grand opening Solo flights Grant recipients

Selected playwrights will receive $10,000 to support the further development of their plays.

Colorado’s Theater Aspen has announced that Avaaz by Michael Shayan and Sally: a solo piece by Sandra Seaton received the inaugural scholarships from the Solo flights Funds for the advancement of the project. Each playwright will receive a $10,000 grant to support their further development.

Solo flights, a week-long annual development festival that began in 2019, featured individual shows in the early stages of development. Participating artists have included Beau Bridges, Kaye Winks, Sarah Stiles, Christine Quintana, Emma Ramos, Richard Greenberg, Lameece Issaq, Kate Baldwin, Taylor Trensch, James Naughton, Johanna Day, and more, with directors such as Tyne Rafaeli, Tony Taccone, Lisa Peterson, Hunter Foster and Melia Bensussen.

The judging panel for this year’s grants was made up of distinguished members from various corners of the entertainment industry, including Washington Post Chief Theater Critic Peter Marks, Golden Globe and two-time award-winning actress and playwright covered by NAACP Image Award winner Regina Taylor and film producer Isaac Klausner.
