As SMUSH Gallery navigates the next stage of the pandemic, the Jersey City art space is preparing a mix of new virtual and in-person events.

On Friday, January 28, the in-person artistic opening of “The Body as an Archive” from 6-9 p.m. The visual and performance art project focuses on how our bodies store memories, emotions, experiences and is curated by choreographer/photographer Olga Rabetskaya. The opening is free of charge.

“The Body as an Archive” features Rabetskaya’s dance photographs. There will also be two nights of solo and duo performances celebrating the body through movement on February 18 and 19 with Sierra Hendrix, Mio Ishikawa, Brandon Woods Fern Katz among others. Tickets are $10 to $30.

Following this, SMUSH Gallery continues its performance residency with the Monira Foundation on Saturday January 29 with the Improv Jam at Mana Contemporary from 11am to 1pm. The event takes place at MANA Contemporary’s 4th Floor Dance Studio at 888 Newark Ave. .,Jersey City.

SMUSH will also be hosting a virtual event on January 29 with the Body of Letters Virtual Workshop from 1-4 p.m. The virtual workshop will provide participants with tools and techniques to study and use textual sources to generate movement ideas. The workshop will allow you to explore and apply these methods to build new work in progress.

Everyone will have the opportunity to show their work and receive feedback during a Critical Response Process session. Participants will then have the opportunity to show their work, initiated in the workshop, during a virtual celebration show in April.

Before participating in the workshop, it is advisable to take the time to write a letter which will serve as a basis for your research. The prompt for this letter is “Something I wanted to tell you is…” and make an audio recording of yourself reading the letter aloud. SMUSH will also be hosting its in-person Winter Community Potluck on Thursday, February 3 at 6:30 p.m. Guests may bring a hot dish or pastries and there is a suggested cover charge of $5-$10.
