LAFAYETTE, Ind. – Ogres, they say, are like onions. Peel off the diapers and, well, the young actors of “Shrek The Musical Jr.” can tell you the rest of that line.

The Civic Youth Theater at Lafayette Civic Theater will present “Shrek The Musical Jr.” at the Tippecanoe County Amphitheater on July 30 and 31.

“Junior theater shows are a wonderful little package,” said Julie Baumann, director of “Shrek the Musical Jr.”. “They come with all the accompaniment pre-recorded with the full orchestra, so it’s not just a piano, it looks like there’s a real orchestra playing for the kids.”

Junior theater performances don’t mean performers are less serious in their role than their adult counterparts. With rehearsals from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., five days a week for a month until performances, the child actors are very devoted to their role.

“This particular cast was so quick to learn,” Baumann said. “They’re so creative. They’ve brought so much of their own personalities and studies to their characters. There hasn’t been as much character work as it usually would have to, because the actors brought it – same. “

This is far from the first time that Baumann has sat in the director’s chair, as she has six years of Civic Theater experience behind her.

Liam Kelley, 15, Shrek, and Lily Fields, 14, Princess Fiona, rehearse for Shrek the Musical Jr. on Thursday, July 15, 2021 in West Lafayette.

“(I conducted) at least 12 (shows) at Civic,” Baumann said. “But over 40 years in my life.”

While the Civic Youth Theater typically accepts children between the ages of 8 and 18 for performances, classes available through the theater begin at age three and continue through adulthood.

Lessons booked on an individual basis, such as one-to-one lessons, split lessons to meet specific age groups, gender-specific lessons, etc. are available at the Lafayette Civic Center. More information on courses and camps are available at Civic Theater website.

General admission tickets are $ 14 and VIP tickets, which allow patrons to enjoy the show from an air-conditioned press box, are $ 30.
