GEORGE TOWN: Police here arrested 21 people during a raid on an illegal gambling den in a Gat Lebuh Maccalum store on Monday, June 21.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Soffian Santong said the suspects, aged 30 to 64, were arrested by a team of officers from the D7 unit from the district police headquarters during the 5.30 p.m. raid.

“After inspection, we also seized 4,000 RM in cash which would be used for gambling,” he said in a statement.

ACP Soffian said twenty of the suspects had a history of criminal and drug-related offenses.

He added that the shop owner received a notice consisting of RM20,000, while the other suspects received notices consisting of RM400 each for breaking the lockdown.

He said the compound opinions were issued in accordance with Regulation 10 (1) of the Infectious Disease Prevention and Control Regulations 2021, and added that all suspects will be remanded in custody for two days until Wednesday ( June 23) at Bayan Baru Central Lockup.

ACP Soffian also said that the power supply to the premises was cut with the help of the staff of Tenaga Nasional Berhad on Tuesday, June 22 at 10 a.m. under section 21 (A) of the 1953 Houses Act. game commons (amendment of Law 289 of 2001) to ensure that activities do not resume.

He added that the matter was under investigation under section 4 (1) (c) and 6 (2) of the Open Gaming House Act 1953.
