It was a chaotic afternoon on Chicago’s South Side as one person was killed in a shooting at Back of the Yards, while a police officer was injured after a car thief drove away from a another scene in West Englewood.

According to Chicago police, the incident began in the 5100 block of South Elizabeth around 3:25 p.m.

At the scene, a 21-year-old man was standing outside when a vehicle approached and someone began shooting at him.

The man was struck in the chest and taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Following this shooting, the vehicle fled the scene and eventually crashed into the 1900 block of West 57and Street, according to the police.

Three of the four suspects in the car were taken into police custody, but a fourth may have stolen a vehicle from a nearby motorist, police said.

An officer attempted to take the suspect into custody, but was struck by the vehicle as the suspect fled. He was transported to a local hospital, where his condition stabilized.

The latter suspect was eventually arrested near Dan Ryan Woods shortly after, police said.

Charges are pending in the case and Chicago police are continuing their investigation.
