CLEVELAND, Ohio – Ohio casinos and racinos generated $ 2.31 billion in gambling revenue in 2021, stacking up to an annual record already broken in November.

Together, casinos and racinos generated $ 197 million in revenue in December, up from $ 133 million last year, according to reports released Friday by the Ohio Casino and Lottery Control Boards. This is the money kept by the gambling dens, after paying the winnings, but before state taxes and fees.

Breaking a record isn’t unique when it comes to gambling revenue. Ohio’s casinos and racinos have broken the record nine in the past 10 years. The only year they didn’t was 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic shut them down and imposed curfews on them for part of the year.

In 2020, a year marked by closures and curfews, casinos and racinos generated $ 1.44 billion in revenue.

In 2021, they brought in $ 2.31 billion, breaking the record of $ 1.94 billion set in 2019.

A nighttime curfew was issued by Governor Mike DeWine on November 19, 2020, shutting down daily for several hours what is normally 24-hour operations. They resumed full activity in mid-February.

The facilities were also completely closed from mid-March to mid-June in 2020.

Casinos arrived in the state in May 2012 when JACK Cleveland Casino (known at the time as Horseshoe Cleveland) opened. Columbus, Cincinnati and Toledo added casinos last. Racinos started opening in June 2012 on racetracks, with Scioto Downs being the first.

In 2012, $ 430 million in gambling revenue was reported statewide, according to a cleveland.com analysis from state archives.

The three Cleveland-Akron area gambling establishments, JACK Cleveland Casino, JACK Thistledown Racino and MGM Northfield Park, all recorded gains in December compared to December 2020.

* MGM Northfield Park had sales of $ 23 million, up from $ 14.2 million last December.

* JACK Cleveland Casino had $ 21.7 million, compared to $ 13.2 million.

* JACK Thistledown Racino had $ 16.7 million, compared to $ 10.6 million.

In total for 2021, MGM Northfield grossed $ 273.9 million in gaming revenue. JACK Cleveland grossed $ 257.4 million and JACK Thistledown grossed $ 199.1 million.
