Alexa Noel of Iowa serves the ball during the Iowa Women’s Tennis game against Purdue on February 28, 2021 at Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Iowa defeated Purdue 6-1.

Iowa women’s tennis head coach Sasha Schmid split her roster to compete in two events last week.

Schmid sent sophomore Alexa Noel and senior Samantha Mannix to Charleston, SC to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association U.S. Championships.

She also sent sophomore Vipasha Mehra, Samantha Gillas senior and Michelle Bacalla junior to Evanston, Illinois, to compete in the Northwestern Invitational.

Four Hawkeyes have won singles at Evanston: Mehra, Gillas, Bacalla and Mannix. Noel and Mannix were eliminated in the first game of the doubles tournament at the ITA All-American Championships, giving Mannix the opportunity to participate in the Northwestern Invitational. Mannix did not compete in the singles competition at the ITA All-American Championships.

While her teammates competed in Evanston, Noel was trying to win the women’s singles tournament at the ITA All-American Championships in Charleston.

Noel won her first game in the round of 32 of the event on Oct. 6, defeating Gina Dittamn of northern Arizona, 6-3, 6-2.

Noel picked up victories over Valeriya Zelevka of UCF, Georgia Drummy of Duke and Eryn Cayetano of USC in the round of 16, eight and four, respectively.

Noel won his match against Drummy by default of injury.

Although Noel qualified for the final of the ITA All-American Championships singles tournament, she was unable to complete the event. Noel forfeited midway through her game against South Carolina’s Sarah Hammer due to an injury.

Noel is recovering from an ankle injury she suffered in May throughout the 2021-22 season.
