Staging a comedic version of the Clue board game was an easy deduction for Forum Theater.
“We just decided it was time to do something fun, and that’s what it is,” said artistic director Kathryn Page Hauptman.
“Clue On Stage” – not to be confused with “Clue! The Musical, ”which features in theaters across the country — is based on the screenplay for the 1985 film version of“ Clue, ”starring Tim Curry, Madeline Kahn and Christopher Lloyd. While the 36-year-old film gained attention at the time for giving audiences one of three different endings, Hauptman said this version will have three solutions, one after another with an approach. comic rewind.
The stage version brought together the usual suspects: Mrs. White (Briley Meek), Miss Scarlett (Chelsey Ehresman), Mrs. Peacock (Ann Marie Rogers), Colonel Mustard (Ted Woodward), Mr. Green (Ted Dvorak) and Professor Plum (Andrew Walker), as well as Beth Wise as a cook. Craig Benton, a guest artist at the New Theater in Kansas City, plays Wadsworth the Butler, and Simeon Rawls plays Mr. Boddy, along with the background music.
Decorator Ben Juhnke, Hauptman said, created a complex two-story ensemble where projections show the interior and exterior of each room the suspects visited.
“There are a lot of trap doors, trap panels,” Hauptman said. “It’s going to be very, very smart. … It’s a really fun take on the play.
Hauptman said the audience should enjoy “Clue On Stage” as much as she and the cast.
“It’s a very, very smart approach,” she said. “It’s one of those goofy comedies that people love.”
