DENVER – The University of Denver gymnastics team took one step closer to the start of the 2022 season by hosting their Crimson & Gold Intrasquad on Sunday.

For the first time ever, the event was held at the Magness Arena and Denver was able to once again welcome its fans without capacity restrictions for the first time since the 2020 season.

DU did not compete with its full roster on Sunday, but had at least six student-athletes across all four events. Denver expects to have their entire squad for the Jan.9 season opener.

“I thought our team were great tonight with their energy and enthusiasm,” said the head coach Melissa Kutcher-Rinehart noted. “I thought they took advantage of being in Magness for the first time for an intrasquad, and that will help them prepare for January 9.”

She added: “Some of our student-athletes have gained considerable competitive experience today, and we look forward to starting the whole team in January.”

Notable performances included freshmen Mia hebinck and Momoko Iwai, who competed in Denver leotards for the first time in his career and did so on three events each.
