Among the D23 Expo announcements, Disney unveiled Wish, a watercolor/CG animated film starring West Side Story’s Ariana DeBose, slated for release in 2023.

Disney continues to add intriguing offerings to fan watchlists with upcoming film To wish.

Disney Animation has officially unveiled the first look at To wish was given during the D23 Expo on September 9th. According to details revealed via The Hollywood Reporter, West Side StoryAriana DeBose will play a 17-year-old teenager named Asha, a leader who can see a kind of darkness that others aren’t aware of. Thus, the teenager must travel through the realm of wishes to literally wish a star for guidance. She even brings down a real star from space. Indeed, the upcoming movie’s “wish upon a star” theme celebrates Disney’s 100th anniversary and references the song “When You Wish Upon a Star,” which originally appeared in the 1940s. Pinochio.

DeBose made a surprise appearance during D23 to perform “More of Us”, a track from To wish. The film will also feature tracks from Grammy nominee Julia Michaels, and Alan Tudyk will voice a goat named Valentino.. Tudyk is recognized for his many vocal contributions to Disney, often as animals. The Foreign resident star and Firefly alum recently starred as a toucan in both Encanto and Raya and the last dragon in 2021. Currently, no further casting information is known about To wish.

As for directing the project, Oscar-winning director Jennifer Lee will once again team up with Chris Buck as the writers of To wish. Lee and Buck have previously worked together to direct Frozen and Frozen II, the first of which won the Oscar for Best Animated Feature. In addition to writing, Buck will co-direct the feature with Fawn Veerasunthorn, who previously served as story lead for Raya and the last dragon. Additionally, Peter Del Vecho and Juan Pablo Reyes are on board as producers.

To wish will feature a watercolor style mixed with 3D CG animation elements, which was shown to the public. An inside look at the artists playing with how the characters will move was also shown. Of course, other exclusive previews were offered to D23 participants. Some of these upcoming projects include live action White as snow, The little Mermaid and Mufasa: The Lion King, the prequel to the 2019 CGI remake of the Disney classic.

To wish is currently scheduled to arrive in November 2023.
