The Department of Performing Arts and the Detroit Mercy Theater Company invite applications from theater directors to work on projects and productions for its 2022-2023 season and beyond.

The Detroit Mercy Theater Company is an artist collective of faculty, staff, guest artists, and students producing serious and relevant theater. A theater producer for 145 years, it serves as a training ground for University of Detroit Mercy theater majors to develop the intellectual, ethical, and practical skills for a creative future.

The Detroit Mercy Theater Company’s 52nd season will be produced at the Marlene Boll Theater in downtown Detroit and will include three productions: the Michigan premiere of Airness by Chelsea Marcantel from October 28 to November 6, 2022, Pride and Prejudice by Kate Hamill based on the novel by Jane Austen from February 10-26 and Unheard Voices, a work designed by students of the Theater for Social Change class, which will run from April 20-23. In addition to the main stage, DMTC’s TheatreLab is a second-stage collaborative arts lab that offers masterclasses, workshops, student projects, and staged readings in a virtual, recorded, or live setting. .

At this time, DMTC is looking for a director available from September 1 to November 6, 2022 for the production of Airness, as well as directors interested in working on future projects. Ideal candidates will be available to mentor student actors of varying skill levels, demonstrate flexibility, be skilled in clear communication, and have the ability to collaborate with student and professional guest artists. A first experience in theatrical higher education is a plus.

Those interested in applying must submit by May 6 to be considered for the 22-23 season. In order to be considered for future seasons, resumes will be accepted on a rolling basis.

The submission must include:

  • a curriculum vitae/CV that includes 2-3 references
  • a cover letter that talks about your filmmaking philosophy and the style/type of project you prefer
  • You can choose to also include photos, video links, or a website that gives insight into your previous work.

The directors’ allowance for 2022-23 ranges from $200 to $3,000 depending on experience and project size. Submissions can be emailed to [email protected] Questions can be directed to Greg Grobis at [email protected]
